| John Raymond Byrama licensed architect with a full-time practicestill takes every opportunity afforded by the Southern California climate to paint en plein aire. Transparent watercolor is uniquely suited to capture the fleeting light and weather conditions found outdoors with just a short time commitment. John is particularly fond of the spontaneous effects available to the aquarellist and the mediums power for imparting mood and feeling. His design background gives him a special appreciation for buildings and places, perhaps explaining his preference for architectural subjects. His work focuses primarily on interpreting landscape subject matter. Although not averse to experimenting with novel techniques, John paints mostly in a traditional way using a dozen or so artist grade colors on 140-pound paper. John uses only Kolinsky sable rounds and flats. He believes thatalthough with some difficultyit is possible to obtain satisfactory results using student grade paints. And, acceptable pieces can even be produced using inexpensive paper. But it is impossible for John to obtain an expressive painting without having quality brushes. A brush is your connection to the audience and your success directly correlates with the responsiveness of your brush. John received a Bachelors Degree in Architecture from Arizona State University, Tempe and Masters from the University of California, Berkeley in Architecture and City Planning. While at ASU, John studied watercolor with Robert S. Oliver. He has subsequently taken instruction from Robert Uecker, Fealing Lin and Tom Fong in Pasadena. John paints with the Mount Washington Plein Air Painters, a.k.a. the stand-back-and-squint-painters, and his pieces are featured in public and private art collections. |
